PAPP-A |
Pregnancy-associated plasma protein (PAPP-A) is a large molecular weight placenta-derived glycoprotein. During pregnancy it is produced in high concentration by the trophoblast and released into maternal circulation. PAPP-A levels in maternal serum rise steadily with gestational age, most noticeably during the last part pregnancy.
Maternal serum PAPP-A assessment between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, is reported to have significant utility in screening for Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities . A combination of maternal age-related risk, free B-HCG and fetal nuchal translucency (NT) measurements might substantially increase the efficiency of prenatal screening compared to second-trimester screening, using this approach various investigators have reported high detection rates for Down syndrome with less false positive rates. |
