Dengue Blood Test in Delhi: When Should You Get Tested?

{{{Image1}}}

Dengue can cause fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, and changes in platelet counts, particularly during seasonal outbreaks in Delhi NCR. However, similar symptoms can occur with malaria, chikungunya, typhoid and other infections. A dengue blood test in Delhi can help your doctor investigate the cause of fever and determine appropriate next steps.

At Dr. Dangs Lab, dengue testing and broader fever investigations can help support clinical assessment. The right tests depend on symptom duration, medical history, examination findings and your doctor's advice.

What Is Dengue and What Are Its Symptoms?

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection. Common symptoms include high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting and skin rash. Some patients also develop reduced platelet counts.

Prevention begins with avoiding mosquito bites. Use appropriate mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing, use window screens and remove stagnant water from containers around your home.

Seek urgent medical attention for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, breathing difficulty, faintness or unusual drowsiness. Warning signs can develop even as the fever subsides.

When Should You Get a Dengue Blood Test?

Consider medical evaluation if you develop fever accompanied by severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle or joint pain, nausea or a skin rash, especially during dengue season.

Testing may be appropriate from the early days of fever. Dengue NS1 antigen testing and molecular tests such as RT-PCR can help detect an acute infection during the first week, while IgM antibody testing becomes increasingly useful as the illness progresses. A negative early result does not always exclude dengue. Your doctor may recommend additional or repeat testing when symptoms remain suggestive of infection.

Do not delay medical care while waiting for a test result if symptoms are worsening. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, unusual drowsiness or restlessness, breathing difficulty or faintness require urgent medical assessment.

Dengue Rapid Test vs Fever Profile: Which Should You Choose?

A dengue rapid test may detect NS1 antigen, IgM antibodies, IgG antibodies or a combination, depending on the method. Confirm which markers are included before booking.

When symptoms overlap with other infections, investigating dengue alone may not provide the complete clinical picture. A broader fever profile can help assess several possible causes of fever.

Dr. Dangs Lab lists two fever investigation packages:

Fever Profile Basic: Includes CBC with ESR, malaria investigations, Dengue NS1, IgM and IgG, urine routine examination and Typhidot.
Fever Profile Advanced: Includes investigations from the basic profile, with additional tests for selected infections and inflammation, including CRP, Chikungunya PCR, Leptospira IgM, Scrub Typhus PCR and cultures for selected bacterial infections.

The exact package contents should be confirmed before booking. Not every test is necessary for every patient. Your doctor should select investigations according to symptoms, exposure history and examination findings.

Book a Fever Profile: Discuss the available options with Dr. Dangs Lab if you need an assessment for dengue-like fever.

What Do Dengue NS1, IgM and IgG Results Mean?

NS1 antigen: Helps identify dengue infection during the acute phase, particularly in the first seven days.
IgM antibodies: Usually become detectable several days after symptoms begin and can support the assessment of a recent infection.
IgG antibodies: May reflect previous dengue or related flavivirus exposure. A single positive IgG result does not, by itself, establish an acute dengue infection.

Results must be interpreted in context. If early tests are negative but clinical suspicion remains, a doctor may recommend further testing.

How Do CRP and CPK Help in Dengue-Like Illness?

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation. It may help clinicians assess inflammatory activity during a febrile illness and interpret findings alongside symptoms and other investigations. However, CRP is nonspecific and cannot independently distinguish dengue from bacterial or other infections.

Creatine phosphokinase (CPK), also called creatine kinase (CK), is an enzyme found predominantly in skeletal muscle. Dengue and other infections can cause substantial muscle aches and, occasionally, muscle injury. CPK testing may be useful when a doctor suspects significant muscle damage, marked muscular weakness or another muscle-related complication. It is not a routine diagnostic test for every dengue patient.

Depending on the clinical picture, additional blood tests for liver function, kidney function or other suspected infections may also be appropriate.

What Is G6PD Testing and Why Is It Important?

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an inherited condition affecting the protection of red blood cells against oxidative stress. People with this deficiency may develop red blood cell breakdown after exposure to certain medicines, infections or other triggers.

G6PD testing is generally a once-in-a-lifetime test for an individual with a stable enzyme status, although repeat or confirmatory testing may sometimes be needed. Knowing the result can help clinicians assess medication safety before prescribing certain drugs, including some medicines used to treat malaria and other conditions. The result is particularly relevant when a medicine associated with haemolysis is being considered.

G6PD testing is not a routine dengue diagnostic test. It may be considered separately when clinically indicated, especially before specific treatments.

How Is Dengue Diagnosed and Managed?

Diagnosis combines symptoms, physical examination, medical history and appropriate laboratory tests. No single platelet count, CRP result or fever profile can establish the full diagnosis independently.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Medical management focuses on appropriate hydration, monitoring and supportive care. Avoid self-medicating, particularly with aspirin or ibuprofen when dengue is suspected, because these medicines can increase bleeding risk. Seek medical advice about suitable fever relief.

FAQs Around Dengue Test

1. Can dengue be detected on the first day of fever?

A doctor may recommend early testing, but the appropriate method depends on symptom duration. An early negative result may not exclude dengue.

2. Should I choose a dengue test or a fever profile?

A dengue test focuses on dengue markers. A fever profile investigates several possible causes and may be useful when symptoms overlap.

3. Does a low platelet count confirm dengue?

No. Platelets can decrease in several conditions. Diagnosis requires clinical assessment and appropriate testing.

4. Is CPK necessary for every dengue patient?

No. CPK is generally considered when significant muscle injury or another muscle-related complication is suspected.

5. Do I need G6PD testing during dengue?

Not routinely. It may be useful separately when assessing the safety of certain medicines or investigating suspected G6PD deficiency.
